There is no 2025 Volkswagen Arteon. VW ended production of its fastback flagship in late 2023, skipped the 2024 model year in the US entirely, and then canceled the electric successor that was supposed to take its place. Here is what happened, what the final Arteon offered, and whether the discontinued model is worth buying used.
Why the 2025 Arteon does not exist
Volkswagen dropped the Arteon a year earlier than planned: the 2023 model year was the last one sold in the United States, and production for the US market wound down quietly at the end of 2023. The reason was simple arithmetic. The Arteon averaged fewer than 3,000 US sales a year, and at a price hovering around $45,000 it sat uncomfortably close to entry-level Audi territory — a fight a Volkswagen badge rarely wins. As buyers kept migrating to SUVs, niche low-volume sedans were the first models cut.
Final specs: the 2023 Arteon
The Arteon at least went out with its best powertrain. For its final year, every US Arteon carried the 300-hp version of VW’s EA888 four-cylinder turbo.
| Spec | 2023 Volkswagen Arteon |
|---|---|
| Engine | 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 (EA888) |
| Power | 300 hp |
| Torque | 295 lb-ft |
| Transmission | 7-speed DSG dual-clutch |
| Drivetrain | FWD standard, 4MOTION AWD available |
| Body | 5-door fastback (liftback trunk) |
The 300-hp tune prefers premium fuel to deliver its full rating — our explainer on what octane actually does covers why turbocharged engines are the ones that genuinely care. There was never a manual option, and Europe’s handsome Shooting Brake wagon never crossed the Atlantic.

The successor that never came
The Arteon’s replacement was supposed to be the ID.7, VW’s electric fastback of nearly identical silhouette. It was announced for North America, delayed in May 2024 as “market dynamics” shifted, and ultimately canceled for the US market — it is sold in Europe only. That leaves VW of America with no sedan flagship at all, and buyers weighing an electric alternative should first run the numbers on what an electrified car really costs to own.
Is a used Arteon worth buying?
Discontinuation did used buyers a favor. The Arteon’s weaknesses were always commercial, not mechanical: it is a spacious, refined liftback with a proven engine family, and depreciation on a low-volume model runs steep. A 2022–2023 car with the 300-hp engine and 4MOTION undercuts comparable German-badged rivals by a wide margin. The one habit to check on a test drive is the DSG’s low-speed manners — dual-clutch gearboxes trade a little parking-lot smoothness for their fast shifts, part of the same trade-off we cover in our look at whether manuals still matter.
