Quick summary

  • The 2025 GX 550 uses one engine: a 349-hp 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 with 479 lb-ft and a 10-speed automatic.
  • Six trims run from about $65,585 to $80,695, split between luxury-focused models and the off-road Overtrail pair.
  • The Overtrail trades the third-row seat for a suspension lift, 33-inch all-terrain tires, locking differentials, and an air compressor.

Short answer: the 2025 Lexus GX 550 uses a single 349-hp twin-turbo V6 across six trims priced from about $65,585 to $80,695, and the Overtrail pair is the one built for dirt. The trim names hide a real fork in character.

What are the 2025 Lexus GX 550 specs?

The engine is a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6, 349 hp and 479 lb-ft, driving all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic. Underneath is the GA-F ladder frame rather than a crossover platform, and there is no V8 and no hybrid in the US lineup — the turbos replaced the old GX’s V8 with more torque, delivered earlier.

The engine is the same 3.4-liter twin-turbo family Toyota fits to the Tundra pickup, tuned here for 349 hp and the identical 479 lb-ft. It replaced the old GX’s V8 with more torque, delivered earlier — and its turbos are also the reason the GX prefers premium fuel for peak output. Underneath sits the same GA-F ladder frame as the global Land Cruiser family, which is why the GX tows and crawls like a truck rather than a crossover.

What does the Overtrail trim add?

The Overtrail adds a one-inch suspension lift, 33-inch all-terrain tires, locking differentials, and an onboard air compressor, and it drops the third-row seat for cargo space. Six trims — Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail, Overtrail+ — but really two personalities. The Luxury pair leans limousine: 22-inch wheels, third-row seat, the full leather treatment, topping out at $80,695. The Overtrail pair is the honest off-roader, and the compressor exists so you can air the tires back up after a trail. It is the configuration that made this GX generation a cult hit — the same recipe, scaled up, that Subaru applies to its Crosstrek Wilderness at a fifth of the price.

Which GX to buy

If the truck will live on pavement, the Premium+ carries most of the Luxury’s equipment for thousands less. If it will ever see dirt, the Overtrail is the one — the lift and tires transform its capability, and skipping the third row costs little in a vehicle whose way-back was tight anyway. Either way the 349-hp V6 is the sole engine, so the decision is entirely about hardware and intent, not power.
